  • Bouchon Bakery

    Address:
6528 Washington St, Yountville, CA 94599, USA .

French-style bakery from chef Thomas Keller offering pastries plus sandwiches, coffee & a courtyard.

"France meets Napa Valley in a delicious way at Bouchon Bakery in Yountville. If you have a sweet tooth, you'll have tough decisions to make with choices like Pain au Chocolat, Monkey Bread, Blueberry Muffins, and Cinnamon Rolls. That's if you can make it past the croissant selection. In the mood for something a bit more savory? There's the Ham, Cheese & Egg Croissant or the Bacon Cheddar Scone. Space is dedicated to the bakery; there's no seating inside. But there's an outdoor courtyard where you can sit and enjoy breakfast. Just be forewarned, the birds like baked goods just as much as you do, and are on constant lookout for unattended leftovers." 10Best

6640 Washington St, Yountville, CA 94599, USA .

Chef Thomas Keller's refined fixed-price meals continually draw food lovers to this stone farmhouse.

"Consistently “superior” standards continue to mark Thomas Keller’s fine-dining “nirvana” in Yountville, which “awakens the senses” with “soul-satisfying” French-American tasting menus paired with “amazing” wines and served with “formal” flair in a setting that “oozes class and sophistication”; the “otherworldly” “event” (“plan on three to four hours”) requires “scads of money” and scoring reservations can be “hair-raising”, but the payoff is an “astonishing meal” you’ll never forget." • Ad Hoc

    Address:
6476 Washington St, Yountville, CA 94599, USA .

Informal, comfortable eatery serving American fare with a set menu, created by chef Thomas Keller.

Thomas Keller is not known for particularly casual restaurants, but Ad Hoc + Addendum is just that: a more laidback counterpart to The French Laundry and Bouchon down the street. Ad Hoc serves a four-course, family-style menu that was inspired by chef Keller's childhood; think BBQ smoked tri-tip with baked beans and mac and cheese and, during Sunday brunch, their famous BFC—buttermilk fried chicken. Addendum is situated behind Ad Hoc, a backyard picnic area where you can pick up boxed lunches to go or to enjoy in the garden. The legendary BFC can be found at Addendum from Thursday to Saturday, a flavor bomb of juicy chicken and perfectly crisp breading that comes with cornbread and two rotating sides. Time Out

  • Trefethen Winery

    Address:
1160 Oak Knoll Ave, Napa, CA 94558, USA .

Charming local vineyard in tranquil surrounds offering winery tours, tastings & events.

"Trefethen Family Vineyards is one of Napa’s pioneering wineries. Founded in 1968, John and Janet Trefethen helped define what Napa is today. Five decades later, this legend is still family owned and now includes the third generation, who remain committed to the craft of 100% estate-grown wines." Visit Trefethen.

Surrounding our historic winery, in the heart of the Oak Knoll District of Napa Valley, is our Main Ranch. Its 400 acres of vines are planted in 49 distinct blocks, a mosaic that echoes the complexity of our soils. Sitting on the largest alluvial fan in Napa Valley, where Dry Creek spills onto the valley floor spreading gravel eroded from the Mayacamas over clay and loam left by an ancient ocean, our soils change dramatically across the estate. We have identified over twenty different soil types across the Main Ranch, allowing us to grow 9 different varieties, all planted in their preferred soil.

Our Bordeaux varieties cluster on deposits of alluvial gravel, where water drains deep into the soil, stressing the vines just enough to encourage the ripening of the fruit and the development of flavor. Chardonnay, meanwhile, thrives in the richer loam with a higher capacity for water retention. Our 49 vineyard blocks are broken down further into 120 separate irrigation subblocks, which allow us to tailor the delivery of water to the differing needs of each variety and the unique water holding capacities of the soils in which they are planted.

We are fortunate to be in the Oak Knoll District, where both early-ripening varieties, like Riesling and Chardonnay, and late-ripening varieties, like Cabernet Sauvignon, can prosper. For each variety to reach its true potential, however, we have to both match the grape to its proper soil, and our farming practices to the climate.

For Riesling, Chardonnay, and other early-ripening varieties, we farm for freshness, taking advantage of the built-in air-conditioning of the Oak Knoll District. Cool evenings and foggy mornings preserve a bright acidity and liveliness on the palate, and we manage the foliage to provide shelter from the afternoon sun. For our Bordeaux varieties, on the other hand, our climate is considered relatively cool and we farm for flavor development over our long growing season.  We encourage early budbreak by pruning early, aggressively thin the fruit to ensure balanced vines and we open up the canopy to allow just enough of the warm California sun to fully ripen the berries.

  • Baldacci Winery

    Address:
6236 Silverado Trail South, Napa, CA 94558, USA .

Located in the heart of the Stags Leap District of the Napa Valley, Baldacci Family Vineyards is a limited production, family owned and operated winery run by second generation vintner, Michael Baldacci. Established in 1998, the winery is well known for its single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon wines as well as for its friendly and welcoming hospitality. Visit

    Brenda’s VineyardStags Leap District

The Baldacci family purchased the Stags Leap property in 1998 as a real-estate opportunity. The investment was especially attractive because there was a knoll-top residence that needed to be finished and this was something that fit into the family’s real estate development business. What wasn’t anticipated was the family’s growing affection for the vineyard! The view kept changing with the seasons, and each weekend the family found themselves immersed in the beauty: the leaves, the mustard, the hawks hunting for mice, the sunset as it dipped down below Spring Mountain and cast its red-orange glow across the Stags Leap Palisades. The initial investment plan went out the window and a long-term viewpoint was adopted: hold on to the land, make a commitment to the next generation through this stewardship and create a space for friends and family to escape from the hectic pace of everyday life.

    Honey B VineyardCarneros

The Honey B Vineyard, located on Cuttings Wharf in the Carneros AVA, was added to the estate vineyard portfolio in 2008. The 23-acre property is planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot and Gewürztraminer. The Sorelle Chardonnay and Elizabeth Pinot Noir are the cornerstone offerings from this vineyard. The Syrah and Merlot are often found in the Fraternity blend, while in exceptional vintages, a barrel selection of Allwin Syrah is produced. Finally, the Gewürztraminer, which accounts for 20% of the total grown in Napa County, becomes our Frederich Gewürztraminer, a rare, bone-dry expression perfect for everyday drinking.

    Stella Knight VineyardCalistoga

In 2013, the estate vineyard porfolio once again expanded with the purchase of the Stella Knight Vineyard. The 8.5 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are located in Calistoga, at the base of Diamond Mountain. The region is one of the hottest parts of the Napa Valley, with a soil series of volcanic bedrock and sediment – ideal growing conditions for premium wine grapes. Calistoga’s unique geology and climate offer another opportunity for Rolando and Ricardo Herrera to explore new personalities of Cabernet. Stay tuned for a single vineyard offering of Cabernet Sauvignon from the 2014 harvest.

  • O'Brien Estate Winery

    Address:
1200 Orchard Ave, Napa, CA 94558, USA .

From planting to bottling, the entire wine-making process occurs on this relatively small plot of land (comprising 40 acres of vineyards, a winery and the owner's home). And by all accounts, the end result is a hit with visitors. Consider a wine tour at O'Brien Estate if you're looking for a relaxed, intimate atmosphere with personalized service.

Recent visitors raved about the tour guides, who share interesting and educational facts about the winery, but also give plenty of alone time to kick back, relax and savor the wine experience. Expect stunning views of Oak Knoll Appellation, plus a welcome glass of wine upon your arrival.

  • Frog's Leap Winery

    Address:
8815 Conn Creek Rd, Rutherford, CA 94573, USA .

Owner and winemaker, John Williams, started as a dairy farmer in New York, but fell in love with winemaking and opened his own winery in 1981, known as Frog's Leap Winery. This country farm meets vineyard is the perfect place to enjoy great wine and company without the stuffiness sometimes found at wineries. Plus, Frog's Leap farms organically, so you're making healthy choices by the drinking wine – right?

Some say this winery offers the most relaxed and enjoyable tour-tasting in Napa Valley. Tour guides lead you through the fruit and vegetable gardens, the fermentation room, barrel room and the gorgeous farmhouse. Recent guests love leisurely savoring their wine while gazing at the gardens and Mayacamas Mountains from rocking chairs on the farmhouse porch. Guests also said that the occasional run-in with the jovial winemaker John Williams is always a treat.

Tours are offered at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and are limited to 10 people. To secure a spot (tours fill quickly with only 10 allowed at a time), reserve a day or two in advance. The $25 tour fee includes a tasting of four current release wines. • Schramsberg Vineyards

    Address:
1400 Schramsberg Rd, Calistoga, CA 94515, USA .

In "The Silverado Squatters," Robert Louis Stevenson describes Schramsberg's founder Jacob Schram's "serious gusto" to produce incredible vintages that America and indeed the world had yet to taste. More than 150 years later, Schram's winery is still producing delectable wines, according to recent visitors. Tours led by friendly guides detail the property's history, the beautiful rows of vines and particularly, the winery caverns. Carved in the 19th-century, these caverns hold approximately 2.5 million bottles of precious wine.

Recent visitors said the winery tour is interesting — especially the historic caves — and worth the extra money. But many advise travelers to book their tour far in advance, as there are a limited number of spots and they tend to fill up fast. And, of course, many rave about the sparkling wine, the vineyard's specialty.

Located in Calistoga, California, Schramsberg Vineyards offers six tours daily between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The tour, which usually takes about an hour and 15 minutes costs $60 per adult (visitors younger than 21 and pets are not allowed). For more information, check out the vineyard's website. If you'd like to visit more than one more winery, consider signing up for one of the best Napa Valley tours.

  • Far Niente Winery

    Address:
    1350 Acacia Dr, Oakville, CA 94562 .

Those who wish to avoid the crowds should head to Far Niente. The appointment-only tours are small and informational, leaving guests impressed by the knowledgeable and friendly guides. But the pristine grounds and fascinating wine caverns are the first highlights. The caves store hundreds of barrels of coveted wine (and span 40,000 square feet), while the 13 acres surrounding the winery are landscaped with thousands of colorful flowers (The azaleas are a particular point of pride). Also, Far Niente's Carriage House houses vintage cars and motorcycles. Every tour ends with an ample tasting of five vintages and a seasonal cheese pairing.

Recent Far Niente visitors raved about the extensive tour that showed not only the underground caves but the gardens and vintage automobiles too. Many also commented on the individualized attention that was given to each person and the well-versed tour guides. Learning how to properly pair wine and cheese is an added bonus.

Tours and tastings (which include a seasonal cheese pairing) are costly at $65 per person, but recent visitors said it's worth the price. Near the small town of Oakville, Far Niente is open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, but you must have an appointment. Tours and tasting appointments are offered daily from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, check out the winery's website.

Some call it Napa's hidden gem or best-kept secret, others might call it a beautiful assortment of the bizarre. But di Rosa is truly an outdoor sculpture garden in California wine country. More than 2,000 works from more than 800 artists are scattered across 217 gorgeous acres and inside di Rosa's Gatehouse Gallery. Travelers find that a visit to di Rosa is an ideal break from the multitude of winery tours.

And even if you're not into art, you'll still enjoy strolling the premises and the beautiful scenery. Past visitors say the garden is filled with eccentric and interesting pieces, commenting particularly on the house filled with artifacts from different time periods. Many also recommend taking a guided tour to be able to see more of the grounds and gain some context behind certain pieces.

Along Carneros Highway, di Rosa is open from 10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Admission is free, but there is a suggested $5 donation at the Gatehouse Gallery. • Robert Mondavi Winery

    Address:
7801 St Helena Hwy, Oakville, CA 94562, USA .

The Robert Mondavi Winery's art collection and calendar of musical performances are a strong indicator of its heavyweight status among California vineyards and wineries. You've even probably spotted the name "Robert Mondavi" on the shelf of your local grocery store. This Oakville winery was one of the first major Napa Valley producers to cater to visitors with a tourist experience. Guests receive a 90-minute explanation of how a large-scale, technologically advanced winery functions.

Recent visitors raved about the delectable cuisine and, of course, the wine, which were perfectly paired. But many said the success of their experience depended solely on their tour guide. Some had wonderful tour guides and in turn wonderful experiences, other said their tour guides were below par, which contributed to a lesser experience.

The winery is open to visitors every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The winery offers a variety of tours and events like a summer concert series that range in price, starting at $20 per person. Make an online reservation and learn more about possible tours at the winery's website. If you'd like to visit more than one more winery, consider signing up for one of the best Napa Valley tours.
